How Australian consumers and businesses are using social media

This is the future – like next year?

We have been fortunate in Australia over the past few years: Sensis has undertaken an annual survey of Australian consumers and business to find out how and why they use social media. The report usually comes out in June each year. It is well worth keeping an eye out for as its data is invaluable.

Because I’m a lovely person, I’ve summarised some of the more useful, and often quirky, data from the 2017 report this year’s report for you. You’re welcome. 🙂

I highly recommend you download and read the report in full – it’s an easy read, with many of the results explained in plain language. You do not need to be a data nerd to understand it and extrapolate its use to your organisation!

Social media use in Australia – key stats:

  • 99% of Australians have an internet-enabled device (we average three each).
  • 81% own a smartphone (59% laptop, 51% desktop, 45% tablet). In terms of age, 99% of 18-29-year olds and 96% of 30-39-year olds own a smartphone.
  • 84% of Aussies access the internet daily, with 56% accessing the internet more than five times a day.
  • 79% use social networking sites (up from 69% in 2016), and 35% check social media more than five times a day.

Where we use social media:

  • 57% use social media first thing in the morning, 18% when commuting, 21% during work (this seems quite low to me), 47% on breaks, 47% at lunch time, 71% after work/in the evening, and 39% last thing before bed. This changes quite a lot depending on the age group. For example, 79% of 18-29-year olds check social media first thing in the morning, compared to 43% of 50-64-year olds.
  • 96% use social media at home compared with 35% at work, 43% on public transport, 33% at restaurants/bars/parties, 37% in the car (I hope this isn’t while driving, although I suspect for far too many it is), 16% at sporting events and 14% while on the loo (!!!). Interestingly, 17% of males use it on the toilet compared to 12% of females, and 29% of these are 18-29-year olds. Yes, I also said ewwww!
  • About 35% use social media while watching TV, with 43% of these people watching reality TV.

 The sites we use:

  • Social networking sites used were Facebook (94%), YouTube (51%), Instagram (46%), Snapchat (40%), Twitter (32%), LinkedIn (18%) and Pinterest (10%).
  • In terms of messaging services, 81% use Facebook Messenger, 34% use Viber, 18% use WhatsApp and 12% don’t use any form of messaging service.
  • The typical user spends almost 10 hours a week on Facebook.
  • Smartphones are by far the most preferred device for social networking, with 81% of users accessing social media via a smartphone (a steady increase since 2011). This compares to 30% accessing it on a laptop, 28% on a desktop and 25% on a tablet.
  • Why do people use social media? Not surprisingly, 89% said to catch up with friends and family, 43% said to watch videos, 26% said to find or connect with people with the same interests, 18% said to find out about brands/businesses, 16% said to research products or services, and 9% said to engage with brands for customer-service reasons.
  • Advertising isn’t the taboo you might expect, with 30% of people quite happy to see ads on social networking sites (however, 30% are not). 57% ignore sponsored posts from businesses they don’t follow.
  • 37% will inspect a brand’s social media presence before making a purchase.

What are Australian businesses doing on social media?

Now, here is the good stuff. What are Australian businesses doing on social media? Let me tell you right now, not enough of you are using it. And you should be.

  • 53% of small businesses are not on social media, compared to 51% of medium businesses and 40% of large businesses.
  • The businesses that do use social media primarily use Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.
  • Large businesses (95%) mostly use social media for two-way communication with clients and contacts – this is up from 76% in 2016, and a model that small and medium-sized businesses need to follow.
  • Only 36% of small businesses that use social media update every day (up from 23% in 2016).
  • Most businesses do not measure their social media return on investment. If this is you, make sure you read Chapter 6 on measurement and analytics.
  • Only 40% of small businesses and 43% of medium-sized businesses have a social media strategy. If you’re not one of them, I can help you. Get in touch with me Now.

What does this mean for your business?

Plenty of things.

  • If you’re not using social media, you need to be. Your customers are there, and you are missing out on some excellent opportunities to engage with them. If your target audience includes anyone under the age of 40 and you’re not using social media, you’re crazy.
  • Social media is awesome for providing excellence in customer service.
  • If you only promote your business during work hours, say, 9am-5pm or even 8am-6pm, you miss out on valuable opportunities to engage, given most people use social media when they wake up and after work. This means you need to do some serious rethinking. You don’t need to be on social media 24/7, but you need to have more than just a 9-5 presence.
  • Given the clear majority of people use Facebook (95%), it’s vital that you consider Facebook as a marketing tool. The significantly smaller usage of other social media channels is a clear indication that you need to know who your target market is and where they are likely to be. Gary Vaynerchuk reckons all brands with a target audience aged between 20 and 100 need to be on Facebook. Believe him.
  • Write a social media strategy. If you use social media but don’t have a strategy, you’re wasting your time and energy. Your plan needs to link to your overarching business strategy and marketing plan.
  • Be aware of social media demographics, and how and where they access it. Know the demographics of your target market and know where they are. Be responsive to them. Increasingly, there is the expectation that businesses are on social media, so you need a valid reason if you are not. “I’m too scared” or “I can’t be bothered” doesn’t cut it.

 

FUTURE PREDICTIONS:

In 1998, Kodak had 170,000 employees and sold 85% of all photo paper worldwide. Within just a few years, their business model disappeared and they went bankrupt. What happened to Kodak will happen in a lot of industries in the next 10 years – and most people don’t see it coming. Did you think in 1998 that 3 years later you would never take pictures on paper film again? Yet digital cameras were invented in 1975. The first ones only had 10,000 pixels, but followed Moore’s law. So as with all exponential technologies, it was a disappointment for a long time, before it became way superior and got mainstream in only a few short years. It will now happen with Artificial Intelligence, health, autonomous and electric cars, education, 3D printing, agriculture and jobs. Welcome to the 4th Industrial Revolution. Welcome to the Exponential Age.

Software will disrupt most traditional industries in the next 5-10 years.
Uber is just a software tool, they don’t own any cars, and are now the biggest taxi company in the world. Airbnb is now the biggest hotel company in the world, although they don’t own any properties.

Artificial Intelligence: Computers become exponentially better in understanding the world. This year, a computer beat the best Go player in the world, 10 years earlier than expected. In the US, young lawyers already don’t get jobs. Because of IBM Watson, you can get legal advice (so far for more or less basic stuff) within seconds, with 90% accuracy compared with 70% accuracy when done by humans. So if you study law, stop immediately. There will be 90% fewer lawyers in the future, only specialists will remain. Watson already helps nurses diagnosing cancer, 4 time more accurate than human nurses. Facebook now has a pattern recognition software that can recognize faces better than humans. By 2030, computers will become more intelligent than humans.

Autonomous Cars: In 2018 the first self-driving cars will appear for the public. Around 2020, the complete industry will start to be disrupted. You don’t want to own a car anymore. You will call a car with your phone, it will show up at your location and drive you to your destination. You will not need to park it, you only pay for the driven distance and can be productive while driving. Our kids will never get a driver’s license and will never own a car. It will change the cities, because we will need 90-95% fewer cars for that. We can transform former parking space into parks. 1.2 million people die each year in car accidents worldwide. We now have one accident every 100,000 km, with autonomous driving that will drop to one accident in 10 million km. That will save a million lives each year.

Most car companies may become bankrupt. Traditional car companies try the evolutionary approach and just build a better car, while tech companies (Tesla, Apple, Google) will do the revolutionary approach and build a computer on wheels. I spoke to a lot of engineers from Volkswagen and Audi; they are completely terrified of Tesla.

Insurance Companies will have massive trouble because without accidents, the insurance will become 100x cheaper. Their car insurance business model will disappear.

Real estate will change. Because if you can work while you commute, people will move further away to live in a more beautiful neighborhood.

Electric cars won’t become mainstream until 2020. Cities will be less noisy because all cars will run on electric. Electricity will become incredibly cheap and clean: Solar production has been on an exponential curve for 30 years, but you can only now see the impact. Last year, more solar energy was installed worldwide than fossil. The price for solar will drop so much that all coal companies will be out of business by 2025.

With cheap electricity comes cheap and abundant water. Desalination now only needs 2kWh per cubic meter. We don’t have scarce water in most places, we only have scarce drinking water. Imagine what will be possible if anyone can have as much clean water as he wants, for nearly no cost.

Health: There will be companies that will build a medical device (called the “Tricorder” from Star Trek) that works with your phone, which takes your retina scan, your blood sample and you breathe into it. It then analyses 54 biomarkers that will identify nearly any disease. It will be cheap, so in a few years everyone on this planet will have access to world class medicine, nearly for free.

3D printing: The price of the cheapest 3D printer came down from $18,000 to $400 within 10 years. In the same time, it became 100 times faster. All major shoe companies started 3D printing shoes. Spare airplane parts are already 3D printed in remote airports. The space station now has a printer that eliminates the need for the large number of spare parts they used to have in the past.

At the end of this year, new smart phones will have 3D scanning possibilities. You can then 3D scan your feet and print your perfect shoe at home. In China, they already 3D printed a complete 6-storey office building. By 2027, 10% of everything that’s being produced will be 3D printed.

Business Opportunities: If you think of a niche you want to go in, ask yourself: “in the future, do you think we will have that?” and if the answer is yes, how can you make that happen sooner? If it doesn’t work with your phone, forget the idea. And any idea designed for success in the 20th century is doomed in to failure in the 21st century.

Work: 70-80% of jobs will disappear in the next 20 years. There will be a lot of new jobs, but it is not clear if there will be enough new jobs in such a small time.

Agriculture: There will be a $100 agricultural robot in the future. Farmers in 3rd world countries can then become managers of their field instead of working all days on their fields. Agroponics will need much less water. The first Petri dish produced veal is now available and will be cheaper than cow-produced veal in 2018. Right now, 30% of all agricultural surfaces is used for cows. Imagine if we don’t need that space anymore. There are several startups that will bring insect protein to the market shortly. It contains more protein than meat. It will be labeled as “alternative protein source” (because most people still reject the idea of eating insects).

There is an app called “moodies” which can already tell in which mood you are. Until 2020 there will be apps that can tell by your facial expressions if you are lying. Imagine a political debate where it’s being displayed when they are telling the truth and when not.

Bitcoin will become mainstream this year and might even become the default reserve currency.

Longevity: Right now, the average life span increases by 3 months per year. Four years ago, the life span used to be 79 years, now it’s 80 years. The increase itself is increasing and by 2036, there will be more than one year increase per year. So we all might live for a long long time, probably way more than 100.

Education: The cheapest smart phones are already at $10 in Africa and Asia. Until 2020, 70% of all humans will own a smart phone. That means, everyone has the same access to world class education.

CASH, A PASSIVE INCOME STREAM AND BRICKS N MORTAR.

IT’S SIMPLER THAN YOU THINK.

It bemuses me constantly when I open my inbox checking out another offer too good to be true. Whether its subscribing, getting amongst groups or building lists from you beaut programs, I am inundated with offers which promise me that their program will catapult me into the stratosphere of list building and prosperity. In my three years of searching the home business industry I find that the key component to all this marketing is based on attracting new people coming in and learning (trying to learn) how to try and connect with other new wannabes out there. Nearly all the programs out there want you to sell their copied systems to others with the big statement that theirs is the mother of all systems. Well guess what. They are all basically the same just dressed up differently. You want to buy a red Mustang but the showroom only has one left, and its a black one. Same car. You know where I’m coming from. The industry wants to complicate itself because the different systems out there will argue that they are the simplest most uncomplicated and cheapest on the market and this is why you should buy it. Anyone can learn all of this “stuff” free off the net and not pay for anything. But believe me, that takes time and you could grow despondent and eventually drift away.

There are other ways. The fact is that social media has created a level playing field so it doesn’t matter if you’ve been in the business for 5 min or you are CEO of a multi-million dollar company. The rules are the same. This is what makes the industry so exciting and accessible to everybody and anybody. The world has been shaken by this incredible disruption of digital technology. Not since the Industrial revolution has there been such a change in the way in which business and commerce will be conducted. And we’ve only scratched the surface. Now is the time to take advantage of these amazing opportunities out there. But which opportunities should you look at and chase? This to me was the 64 thousand dollar question. Which one should I go for and will I be comfortable and proud to promote the program or system. Let’s face it, those of you who are reading this are probably building or getting involved with other groups in order to create interest in your marketing plan so that you too can be one of those hundreds of shiny things that invade our inbox’s daily. The question is, how long have you been doing this for and how much money have you actually earned so far? Statistics say that you are probably in the 90% (there abouts) group who barely scratches out some sort of a living if at all. Yes, you see all the time in various product promotions a handful of people seemingly making thousands per month. Well I see the same people constantly repeating the same earnings but with different products almost like a rent-a-success crowd. Hmmmmm.

Getting back to why you are here reading this. I would hazard a guess that originally you got onto the net to see if you could actually make money online and how quickly would you see a result. This is why I got online. I made a bad business decision (you can see my story on my web site) and I wanted back what I had lost. How was I going to do this? THE NET. What I learned after spending thousands of dollars on subscriptions, courses, programs (you name it) hours at seminars and workshops is probably what you are going through now. My summary. It’s like the wheel has turned a full circle for me. IT’S ALL PRETTY MUCH THE SAME. You just have to find THAT THING, the connection with THAT person who makes you comfortable so that when you are promoting whatever it is, you do it with passion and conviction. And THAT person wants you to succeed so that you can pass your success to another person. Don’t be a taker, be a giver. Master this and you’ll be an automatic success.

To me, what I needed was MONEY. I had to find something that created a cash flow for me and get paid virtually on the day of the sale. And more importantly, prove to me that cash can be made with a system that requires the same time and energy as floundering around with most other non producing marketing systems. Selling small products like vitamins (just as an example) you will find it difficult to make any real money at all. Its defeated by the structure of most product based multi level marketing companies. Cash is King I say. And I have found a system that’s been around for about 10years and changing peoples lives. Its simple, easy to implement and is fully automated. You have a great back office structure and you can get paid on the day of the sale, the full hundred percent of the purchase price with no middlemen cutting up the commission. This is perfect for me. I create my own cash flow, I’m in control. I need this because I want to have a couple of affiliate programs I want to sell also, which takes a little time to set up properly, where they (the owners) do all the heavy lifting for me and I get 50% of whatever they get across the line. This works 24/7. And my cash business creates the weekly income I need to pay my bills. I can then sell my (health) product which I have a passion for but there’s no pressure with this product line to produce as I already have a few income streams. My product customers come from these streams without me rattling their cages.

And my end game plan is to buy real estate with the income I have produced over the last two years. Being a cautious Australian (well, so I’m told) I like my rewards to be felt in bricks and mortar. Maybe it’s just an Aussie thing. And just a quickie, we in Australia have a housing shortage (would you believe –on the east coast) and anything you build or renovate you have a line up of people wanting to buy or rent, so if you have invested correctly you too could end up with a surplus after all outgoings have been paid. Just another form of passive income.

So in short, CASH, PASSIVE INCOME, (perhaps PRODUCT) and REAL ESTATE. Now this may seem a little complicated but let me assure you, broken down into segments, you just concentrate on doing one thing at a time. Most importantly YOU NEED TO MAKE MONEY NOW and prove to yourself that it is do able. I’m a great believe in the KISS formula (Keep It Simple Stupid) so nothing you get from me is complicated. So if you want to see how this works and how simple is actually is, look over my shoulder for a while and see if you would feel comfortable doing the things that I am doing. Then and only then get yourself involved and start creating the sort of income you know you can produce. Don’t get taken up by the hype out there.
